Spend the October long weekend exploring Walls of Jerusalem National Park in the central highlands of Tasmania.
This trip is limited to six fit and experienced hikers who travel well together. Participants need good equipment, skills and experience to undertake a multi-night hike in remote and challenging terrain. We pass some historic huts, but there is little in the way of facilities or amenities - just the way we like it! We’ll set up our tents each evening.
The reward will include exploring this fantastic park, a part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The region is an alpine wilderness, dominated by dolerite peaks, highland tarns and alpine vegetation. With half-decent weather, we’ll climb some peaks like Mount Jerusalem, Solomons Throne or The Temple and then relax with a visit to the Pool of Bethesda. With stunning surroundings and these biblical place names, you might have your own kind of religious experience?!
There will be challenges too, with the location often at the mercy of harsh weather. There are solid climbs and descents and the possibility of muddy sections and water crossings. Never discount the chance of snow! We’ll be hiking past various lakes where you might scramble over sharp, loose rocky sections and hit a few marshy bogs. Overall, you can anticipate walking a total distance of around 60 kilometers.
Here’s the trip overview:
