Tasmanian Peregrination

  • Southwest National Park, Tasmania Old Port Davey Track TAS, 7001 Australia (map)

"Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach some of us more than we can ever learn from books." - Sir John Lubbock

Three weeks exploring parts of the vast wilderness of Southwest National Park in Tasmania’s World Heritage Area.

This adventure will suit a small number of fit and experienced long distance hikers who know each other and get along well together. Participants need equipment, skills, knowledge and experience to undertake an extended pack hike in remote and challenging terrain.

The rewards include spending time connecting with this country, including breathtaking views from the Western Arthurs and South West Cape Range and walking in the footsteps of shipwrecked sailors from the 1800’s to experience some of the most pristine and isolated beaches anywhere.

There will be challenges too, with long sections of track resembling an endurance course. Expect deep sloppy mud, huge climbs and descents, deep water swims and row-boat crossings. The weather can turn from glorious sunshine to thumping rain in minutes and relentless wind can tear a poorly located shelter to pieces.

A mix of awesome natural beauty and grinding determination, this will be a truly memorable trip where you can anticipate walking at least 200 kilometres.

A detailed itinerary is available. Here’s an overview:
23 Dec - Fly to Hobart, travel to Scotts Peak Dam, Camp
24 Dec - Start full traverse of Western Arthurs (including rest days and side trips)
