The Castle

  • Meroo National Park Meroo Point Rd Termeil, NSW, 2539 Australia (map)

Beachside camping weekend with full day trip to summit The Castle.

A coastal experience, camping near the beach at Meroo National Park, with an energetic day trip to summit The Castle, an iconic peak in Morton National Park.

You won't see large signposts pointing to fancy visitor facilities at Meroo. This is a sensitive coastal environment waiting for a small crew of light treading campers. We'll camp Friday and Saturday night and head home on Sunday afternoon. Travel lightly as all gear must be carried to the campsites from the carpark.

The Saturday day trip to The Castle totals about 12 km walking, with an 800m climb, capped by a series of exposed scrambles near the summit. Good fitness and a head for heights is required. Consider the walk HARD. It takes around 10 hours to complete and involves a considerable drive on unpaved roads of varying quality. Arrange a lift in a four wheel drive to ensure that you can reach the trackhead.

No camping or park use fees.

• Basic, near beach campsite clearings.
• Pit toilet.
• Travel light, you walk from carpark to campsite.
• No domestic pets in National Park.
• Short drive on unpaved road from highway to campground carpark, suitable for all vehicle types with care.
• Considerable drive on unsealed road to start of The Castle day trip. Arrange lift in a 4WD vehicle.

From Sydney, south 243klms - Allow about 3 1/2 hours.
From Canberra, east 182klms - Allow about 2 1/2 hours.

Meroo National Park is on the NSW South coast between Ulladulla and Batemans Bay, specifically between Lake Tabourie and Termeil (a servo/pie shop and the turn for Bawley Point). It can be difficult to locate the turnoff onto unpaved road for the campground because the area is not well signed. Meroo Point Road is an unpaved trail starting at the Princes Highway on the eastern (beach) side of the highway. Coming from the north, it is about 5.4 kilometers from the bridge at Lake Tabourie. Coming from the south, about 4.1 kilometers from the Bawley Point highway turn.
