George and the Puysegur Adventure

  • Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre 3-7 Lakefront Dr Te Anau, Southland, 9600 New Zealand (map)

25 days exploring remote corners of Fiordland National Park in New Zealand.

This adventure will suit a small number of very fit and very experienced long distance hikers who travel well together. Participants need excellent equipment, skills, knowledge and experience to undertake a long hike with packrafting.

The rewards include spending time in spectacular wild places, like the views from Henry Pass on the route to George Sound. Or the paddle up the middle fiord of Lake Te Anau and across Lake Hankinson. Then there’s the jet boat ride down the Wairaurahiri River from Lake Hauroko to the ocean for a challenging off-track hike along the wild southern coast toward the isolated Puysegur Point Lighthouse, staying in sea caves along the way.

A mix of awesome natural beauty and grinding determination, this trip promises to be unforgettable.

Here’s an overview. A detailed itinerary is available:
21 Dec - Fly Queenstown and bus Te Anau
22 Dec - Paddle across Lake Te Anau and hike to George Sound over 8 days.
29 Dec - Return Te Anau to wash off the dirt and refill the pack
30 Dec - Travel to Lake Hauroko and jet boat to the ocean.
31 Dec - Hike the southern coast toward Puysegur Point over 14 days
13 Jan - Return Te Anau
14 Jan - Queenstown and homeward

Participants can join the entire trip, or choose the George Sound or Puysegur Point sections.
