Mugii Murum-ban

  • Mugii Murum-ban State Conservation Area Unnamed Road Capertee, NSW, 2846 Australia (map)

Explore around Mt Airly and Genowlan Mountain in the Capertee Valley.

Suitable for fit people who have completed recent challenging hikes. You need good hiking and camping gear and to feel comfortable with heights and some climbing exposure. Consider the walk of medium difficulty and know that we climb off track to some of the area’s landmarks.

Mt Airly and Genowlan Mountain have a diamond and oil-shale mining history. Up high, there is a maze of cliffs, pagodas, canyons and slots with great views across the Capertee Valley. We car-camp Friday night and pack-camp Saturday night, carrying all supplies in our packs, including warm clothing and bedding and plenty of drinking water, which may be difficult to find on the plateau.

Meet Friday afternoon or early evening at Airly Gap Campground. We’ll camp here Friday night, then pack camp up on Genowlan Plateau Saturday night. We’ll return to the vehicles at Airly Gap on Sunday afternoon. See this map: https://goo.gl/TxVxeR

We’ll set up tents on Friday afternoon/evening then explore the tramway and ruins of the New Hartley Oil Shale Mine with head torches.

To participate, send an email to Rick (rick@hikeout.org). Check on availability and have a discussion about fitness, experience, equipment and your ability to get to Airly Gap Campground. Note that adding your name on a social media event does NOT confirm attendance. Email only. Event numbers limited.

Read on, then follow links to trip reports and images to get a clear understanding of the kind of terrain we will explore.

IMPORTANT: Bring plenty of drinking water. There may be no ground water to collect, especially up on the plateau once we leave the cars. Airly Gap Campground is an undeveloped site with no amenities, facilities or water supply.

COST:
• No camping or park use fees
